This time, I introduce a little something I've been working on, a somewhat summarized retelling of the history of Ios and its people. This will be divided into a couple of parts as it would be too long to put into just one, so I bring you the first in the series.
I will also do this with the Retribution military, but one thing at a time.

One important note, the contents here is taken and summarized from the Retribution of Scyrah book which is copyright of PrivateerPress and its affiliates, I therefore do not own the information, just this site...Retribution of Scyrah, the history of Ios and the map to the left are all copyright PrivateerPress.

THE HISTORY OF IOS (Part 1)

In the beginning of Ios (or rather, before Ios was Ios) the eight gods lived in a placed called Lyoss and dominated The Veld. How the gods came to be is unknown and has never been discovered, so to the iosans, they simply existed before them.

 The eight gods are:

·        Lacyr- queen of Lyoss and Narcissar of ages

·        Ossyris- Incissar of Hours, Sovereign of conflict  and General of Lyoss

·        Ayisla- Nis-Arsyr of night, Watcher of the Gates of Lyoss

·        Nyrro- Arsyr of day, Senechal and Lorekeeper

The following four gods were the gods of seasons:

·        Scyrah- Nis-Issyr of Spring and Healer of the Divine Court

·        Lurynsar- Issyr of Summer, Arms master of Lyoss and Chief of scouts

·        Lyliss- Nis-Scyir of Autumn, Court assassin and Mistress of poisons

·        Nyssor- Scyir of Winter and Grand crafter

The Veld was constantly described by the gods themselves to be an oasis surrounded by enemies and perhaps would undergo constant attack or threat.

According to their history, Lurynsar was the one who watched mortal souls fall into Caen, intrigued, Lacyr wanted to find out what happened to those souls only to find humanity. Although they were simple and often barbaric, the gods believed that potential was hidden inside and so, Lacyr felt she could create her own people, but one more “refined" and fit for taking over the mortal world. Lacyr set to the task of creating her people and Scyrah served as midwife while she gave birth.

In their first years as mortals, the gods watched and guided their people from their empire in The Veld, teaching them magic, war, agriculture, writing, law, civilization and construction as well as the passing of time, seasons and life itself. Their souls were borrowed from the gods themselves and when a soul passed on, it went to the afterlife where it would meet Ayisla in The Veld who would judge the soul, entry was given to the souls who were worthy…if not, they were sent back so they could try again. The gods gave their people divine insight so they could progress in the fields of natural science, mathematics, engineering, architecture and arcane formulae but they also endowed their people with longevity and lifespan.

The start of their empire was filled with rough and often bloody competition between ancestors but slowly a single voice united the people and gather them into what would later become the Empire of Lyoss (named after the home of the gods), across the years, they would fight back skorne and human enemies and make contact with the dwarves of Rhul…which they saw as neither enemy or competition. Because of an event that I will describe in part 2, their empire would have stretched far beyond what they have, between the waters of the east all the way to the ones in the west and the Orgoth would have had no chance against them. Their rulership was shared by the eight great fanes (one dedicated to each god) and it was the central fanes (Lacyr, Ossyris, Ayisla and Nyrro) who would rule over the administration of the empire while the other four surveyed the outlying regions and while true Lyoss was not any type of utopia, their wealth and food were enough for all, but if any upheaval came to pass, application of force would bring back peace for a while.

The gods would govern the empire by using priests and extensions of their will and directed their daily lives, but the people still felt disconnected from their gods and wanted for them to be in Caen as well, and so, five thousand years ago the people decided to build a bridge that would allow the gods to travel to Caen and live besides their people, then began the planning and construction of the Bridge of Worlds…

The bridge was a massive structure built with the intent of allowing the gods to travel between Caen and The Veld as they saw fit, a stone arch that would extend into the sky and end in an apex which connects to the bridge on the side of the gods, it was designed for perfect mystical alignment with the one in The Veld, arcane generators were built into it and metal sigils were placed extending for miles in the streets of the capital. The bridge took about 250 years with a heavy cost of lives and materials.

At the moment of truth, millions of iosans came to see their gods step from the bridge and celebrate their arrival, the gods then came through and it was a glorious success…but something went horribly wrong, and the ages that would precede were born of unimaginable catastrophe rather than eternity of happiness…and event known as The Cataclysm.
